Two decades ago, I embarked on a college journey, filled with dreams and aspirations. Fourteen years have passed since my academic setback at California State University. Yet, today, as I stand on the cusp of completing my undergraduate journey, the feeling is nothing short of euphoric. The once "elusive degree" is now within my grasp, and the overwhelming pride I feel is indescribable.
The journey has been anything but easy. Countless nights were spent poring over dense academic texts and meticulously crafting papers. The weight of deadlines and the pressure to excel often felt suffocating. But now, as I near the finish line, the emotions are a whirlwind of accomplishment, relief, and sheer joy. The pride in my heart is palpable, knowing that I've conquered challenges that once seemed insurmountable.
The turning point came in 2021 when a casual conversation with a friend reignited my academic aspirations. Their suggestion to explore the University of Washington led me to the Integrated Social Sciences program. The thematic areas resonated deeply with my passions—inequalities and power, information and technology, global diversity & justice. The interdisciplinary nature of the program was a refreshing change, and for the first time in years, I felt a surge of excitement about academia.
In the past 18 months, my perspective has transformed. I've delved deep into the intricacies of societal structures, power dynamics, and the rich tapestry of human experiences. Theoretical concepts were not just confined to textbooks; they came alive as I applied them to real-world scenarios. My projects, such as the media literacy initiative in American Press & Politics and the case study on mineral resource mining in the Democratic Republic of Congo, were not just academic exercises—they were revelations. History has shown the lengths to which the powerful will go to maintain their status, often at the expense of the marginalized and our planet. Yet, it also celebrates the resilience of those who challenge oppressive systems, striving for a better world.
As I look to the future, my vision is clear. As a technologist, I am committed to Responsible AI, ensuring that technology serves as a force for good. My journey in ISS has equipped me with the insights and skills to navigate this complex landscape, ensuring that AI is developed and deployed ethically. With a heart full of pride and eyes set on the horizon, I am ready to make a meaningful impact in the world.
